The National Hockey League suspended Rangers captain Mark Messier for two games Monday for spearing an opponent in a game over the weekend.

Messier will have to sit out the next two games after he speared a Penguins defenseman in a game in Pittsburgh on Sunday. The Penguin player had cross-checked Messier moments earlier.

Messier was ejected during the Rangers’ 4-3 overtime loss.

The 43-year-old Messier, currently in his 25th NHL season, is the second-leading scorer in league history.
